What is the benefit of Reclaimed Lumber?

The lumber we use is 120 year old Eastern White Pine, Southern Yellow Pine, and Douglas Fir which comes from the “Old Globe” Elevator in Superior Wisconsin. This lumber has gone through hundreds of seasonal changes of expansion and contraction cycles. After prolonged time, the wood stabilizes and is almost “warp” resistant. This means no bending, cracking, or warping of the wood. On top of it’s warp resistance, Reclaimed Lumber is extremely dense–stronger than it’s fresh hewn equivalents–and can be used in projects which normally only hardwoods could be used.

So physically speaking, Reclaimed Lumber has got two thumbs up. From a visual and aesthetic standpoint, it exceeds almost any other new wood on the market. The grain texture, color, and depth of the wood has been so manipulated over hundreds of years that it is unlike anything you have ever seen. From reds to greys to yellows, browns, and even blues, the colors found in this wood are truly amazing. The only way to truly experience these colors and textures is in person. So please, feel free to see our samples.

Where’s it from?

At the beginning of the twentieth century, loggers had almost completely eliminated the virgin pine forests of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many of these trees would be transported to lumber mills where they were sawn into lumber for the construction of buildings and homes. Some of these structures are still standing today; however, many of them have exceeded their usability and are now nearing deconstruction.

Normally, these old buildings end up in landfills, but with the proactive solutions brought forth by companies like Wisconsin Woodchuck LLC (our reclaimed lumber supplier), the lumber from these structures is being salvaged piece by piece. Ingvald’s Custom Builds has joined the battle in conserving our world’s endangered forests and you can too. By considering the use of reclaimed wood before you make a furniture purchase or renovation in your home, you can actually protect our forests. On top of that, you are also helping clean up decrepit buildings of times past.
